Miakka Schoolhouse Annual Fall Hootenanny October 6, 2013
President Cathy Hollar, in period costume, gives tours of the 99 year old schoolhouse.
On October 7, 1913, Miakka was the first school district to petition the Manatee County School Board in Bradenton, Florida, requesting the issue of bonds to the amount of $2,500 for the purpose of erecting a school building that would be an ornament and a credit to the community. Other smaller schools could merge. The 2 would be deeded to Manatee Co. by Augustus M. Wilson. Alzie Y. Carlton and Rodney Wilson cleared these two acres by hand.
Note the typical Florida architecture having the structure elevated in case of high water and to shelter the domestic animals such as chickens that managed the termites. Professor Lee Hall and pupils moved in on September 24, 1914. A back room was added later and in 1937 the concrete sidewalk and modern outhouses were constructed. In 1933, Miakka native Jasper Crowley taught six grades here until 1944 when the school was closed. July 3, 1986 the school was officially listed on the National Register of Historical Places. |
